Now that statement might seem pretty obvious , but I am always amazed by the number of successful business people that don’t fully understand the Real purpose of a commercial website in today’s business context. When I started in the online business back in 1997 , it was pretty easy to get sales and enquiries online. Basically you just had to have a half decent website, because most of your competitors didn’t have one, so that gave you an immediate advantage. You could put some products up on an Ecommerce site.
Google would come along and index your site and in a lot of cases, if you followed a few basic rules you products ( or pages) would rank , usually pretty well and you would get traffic coming to your site and again if you did a few of the basics right, you could sell something to someone you had never met, in a town or city you had never visited and everyone was happy. But in the ensuing years, up until the present time, some things have changed dramatically and some things have stayed exactly the same. Let me explain.
Firstly, let’s talk about the changes that have happened.
Well, a lot has changed.
Google for starters is a much smarter search engine than it was in the early days. And if you didn’t adapt and change with the times, then I am sorry to say that you most likely have been left behind.
Technology has changed. And is still changing and evolving at a dizzying pace.
Keeping up with changing technologies ( and I’m Talking online digital Technologies now ) is a constant process of learning and relearning as things change. In fact, I could write a lot about the changes that I have seen since 1997 just in online marketing.
But there is one thing that has not changed.
And that is the concept of why people go to a commercial website in the first place. They either want to buy something or get information about buying something.
Pretty simple right. Well you would think so. But I still see a lot of people get this wrong , every day. I even some web design and marketing agencies get this simple concept wrong…Now that’s a scary thought.
