Its the old physcology adage of "we are either moving away from pain or toward pleasure"
So how does all of this relate to your avarage order value... simple , by pointing out the pain that a customer is experiencing , but then offering a solution to that pain problem you customer is less likley to say "no thanks" and purchase your upsell.
